A (Known) Domestic Abuser and an (Accused) Rapist Walk Into a Locker Room [Opinion]

Today marks the 2-year anniversary of the day that we all saw the video of Ray Rice punching his then fiancee in an elevator, knocking her unconscious.

I decided to do a little Googling to see what Ray Rice is up to these days since he is no longer playing in the NFL. While it seems that he has sought help (maybe? Though I have yet to hear him apologize, or call what happened in that elevator anything other that “the incident” or “the worst decision of my life”). So, what is he up to?

Well, most recently, he spoke to the Florida State Seminoles football team about “the worst decision” of his life, and how it has impacted him and his career and how similar decisions could impact them in their futures (he has a point, yes. But I don’t care how it impacted him.)

Who else did they bring in to speak the the team? Jameis Winston. Winston, despite allegations of sexual assault while he was on campus at FSU, won the Heisman trophy and now plays in the NFL as the quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. No, Winston was not ever convicted of the crime, but it's come out that the investigation was a cluster f--- at best, and at worst possibly completely botched on purpose. In the end, the school's disciplinary committee couldn't really figure out if they should punish Winston or not - so they didn't.

Yes, FSU, continue to show the world that you don’t care about the victims of domestic violence and sexual assault by parading people like Ray Rice and Jameis Winston in front of your players. Sure, you may have thought that bringing Rice in was some sort of precautionary tale-esque “don’t let this happen to you” speech, but it wasn’t. And bringing in Winston to give them a pep talk? He wouldn't have been on your campus at all (probably) if you had done what you were supposed to when the sexual assault allegations first surfaced and you instead swept them under the rug for as long as possible for the sake of football. I hate you, FSU.
