We joke about summer being “construction season” in Michigan, but this summer it’s really going to feel like it with two big road projects planned.

MLive reports that MDOT is closing I-196 at Ottawa Ave as they plan to rebuild the bridge over 131 and widen the roadway.  MLive says that the project should be done around August 31st.

According to MLive the detour for this project is:

The detour for westbound I-196 is I-96 to southbound U.S. 131 and back to I-196. Richard noted that there are other east-west options, including M-6, and 28th, 44th, and 54th streets.

The other major headache has already started slowing motorists down along I-96, but starting April first there will be even more detours and delays as they start the process of closing down eastbound I-96 at Leonard Street.  They’ll start with lane and ramp closures, before the full closing, which is going to happen in early June when they tear down the bridge for westbound I-196 and then build a new bridge for eastbound I-96, according to MLive.

Beltline ramps to I-96 and the ramp from Leonard to east I-96 will be closed.

Detours will be posted but MLive says for the east I-96:

Traffic will be detoured onto southbound U.S. 131 to eastbound I-196.
