Police are investigating a shooting that left two dead and one injured on Eastbound I-96 in Ionia County Saturday night.

Wood TV 8 reports the Ionia County Sheriff's Department is investigating the incident as an attempted-murder suicide.

Around 9:40p.m. Saturday, police were called to the highway on a reported motorist assist. When they arrived, they found two people dead and one injured from an apparent gunshot wound.

The injured person was taken to Butterworth Hospital in critical condition. Sunday morning it is being reported that victim is stable.

According to Wood TV 8, Ionia County Sheriff Dale Miller has said one of the people who died was the shooter.

Police have not yet released the identities of the people involved or the circumstances that lead to the shooting.

Eastbound I-96 was closed from Alden Nash Road south of Lowell to Jordan Lake Road, southwest of Ionia, while police investigated. The highway is now back open.
