The Economic Policy Institute has gathered info on the cost of living across the country and have put it all together in a handy calculator that will tell you the average cost of living for your family.

The calculator isn't exact but it takes into account where you live and your family size.  After entering my information (2 adults, 1 child, living in Wyoming, MI) the calculator determined that my family pays $5,162 monthly and $61,945 annually to live comfortably.  The calculation takes into consideration the following costs:

  • Housing
  • Food
  • Child Care
  • Transportation
  • Health Care
  • Taxes
  • Other Necessities

The three most expensive Michigan counties to live in according to the calculator are:

  1. Leelanau County - $7,452 weekly and $89,427 annually
  2. Washtenaw County - $7,432 weekly and $89,186 annually
  3. Livingston County - $7,231 weekly and $86,773 annually

Kent County is towards the top of the list of expensive counties with an average cost of $6,491 weekly and $77,898 annually to live comfortably.  You can find out what the average cost is of your county here.

You can also get more specific and find out the average cost of living for your city, by entering in your information into the calculator that the Economic Policy Institute provides.
