Country girl Chelsea Sorrell brought her brand of country to the ‘American Idol‘ stage during the first live round for the girls on tonight’s episode (Feb. 29.) Sorrell performed Carrie Underwood‘s ‘Cowboy Casanova’ to show the power in her voice. How did she fare?

She turned in a sassy and rather solid performance, but the judges weren’t loving it by any stretch. They said it was quality, but honed in on the fact that she was a bit nasally, something we had not heard from her before. Sorrell was admittedly nervous, which also could have subtracted from the scope of her performance.

The judges also questioned her choice to be so safe by covering country queen and ‘Idol’ alum Underwood. Since Underwood won the show during her season, Sorrell immediately invited comparisons. The judges did, however, cut Sorrell some slack since going is not always the best slot in the sequence of performances.

All that said, Sorrell did not suck. She was a country cowgirl in her black outfit and red leather jacket. She doesn’t have the largeness of voice of, say, Lauren Alaina, but she has spunk and that could carry her through to another round. It all depends on America’s voting mood tonight.
