Connecticut state Representative Ernest Hewett was attending a hearing in front of the Appropriations Committee hearing at the Connecticut state Capitol. So was a seventeen year old female intern who was there to talk about a program that had helped her come out of her shell and overcome her fear of snakes. In true douche fashion, Rep. Hewett had something completely inappropriate to say about snakes. See what I mean after the jump.

If you're bashful I got a snake sitting under my desk here.

That is what he said to the girl after she finished speaking about the program that had helped her so much. Excuse me?

Realizing that he had just said something that could definitely be taken the wrong way, he quickly apologized. What did he have to say about his comment?

In hindsight, I can really see how this can be misconstrued as something sexual.

Misconstrued? How was it misconstrued? Did the representative actually have a snake under his desk? A real snake? And if so, why in the world would he have a snake at an Appropriations Committee meeting?

At about the 3:10 mark in the audio above, you can hear Representative Hewett's comment to the teen.

Now, I'm not the only one who thinks that his comment was inappropriate. Fellow Democrat and Speaker of the House J. Brendan Sharkey heard the recording, and stripped Hewett of his deputy speaker title. Another member of the House has said that that is merely a "slap on the wrist" and that Representative Hewett should step down from his position.
