Dave Grohl was added to the 2016 Oscars lineup relatively last minute, as the Academy announced he would deliver a "special performance" during the broadcast, with no other details given, leaving many to wonder what his involvement would come to be during the awards show.

It turns out the Foo Fighters frontman was asked to perform during the In Memoriam segment, when the awards show honors major figures in the film industry (David Bowie, Leonard Nimoy) who died within the past year. Accompanied only by an acoustic guitar, Grohl delivered a touching cover of The Beatles' "Blackbird" as a montage played onscreen behind him.

When asked about his Oscars performance earlier in the night, Grohl admitted one of his daughters gave him the impetus to agree to show.

"It's funny...the reason I'm doing this tonight is because, when I told my daughter that I was offered to play she said, 'Well you're gonna do it, aren't you?' and I said, 'Well, I'm kind of a little nervous,'" Grohl said during a pre-show red carpet interview. "And that night I went to sleep and I thought, well, now I have to do it because if I don't do it my daughter's gonna think I'm a big wimp. So I'm doing this one for my daughter for sure."
