This week marked the 20th anniversary of the Detroit Red Wings winning the Stanley Cup for the first time in 42 years, resurrecting the Motor City into a hockey mecca.

Guess what? According to this survey, it still is, in spite of what that whiny friend from Chicago tells you.

The survey by the money site, WalletHub, took into account such things as the performance level of a city's teams, the number of Stanley Cups won, and fan engagement.

Detroit edged out Boston and Pittsburgh to earn the title. The strange thing was Anaheim, California coming in third ahead of longtime hockey hot beds like Chicago and New York.

In addition, Michigan college towns with great NCAA teams like Houghton (Michigan Tech) and Big Rapids (Ferris State, which once let me drive their Zamboni, God bless them!) also fared well. Houghton came in 23rd, while Big Rapids was 31st.

Detroit's title was driven by their fifth place ranking in fan engagement, and of course their 11 Stanley Cup titles, first among NHL American cities.

So, let's take a glimpse back and remember that time we wept openly when captain Stevie Yzerman first hoisted that Cup back in 1997, and skated around the Joe with it.
