Five Boy Bands Wendy Misses, But You May Have Never Heard Of
I make no secret of the fact that I love boy bands. There were so many to choose from back in the late 80's through the early 2000's, but I was a die-hard Blockhead (NKOTB fan, for those of you not in the know). The thing is, the New Kids weren't my only boy band loves. I was also really into a lot of short-lived boy bands that barely anyone else remembers. Here are the five that I miss the most.
BBMak was sort of a British Invasion. This trio arrived near the end of the boy band craze of the 90's, and had a couple of albums and Billboard hits. Most importantly, they had adorable accents and were not nearly as, well, diva-ish, as other boy bands. No weird cornrows for these guys (I'm looking at you, N-Sync-era-Justin-Timberlake with your terrible denim suit). They also let recorded a few songs for Disney, and appeared on the show Even Stevens (Yes, the show Shia LaBeouf was on before he went crazy).
Shut up, O-Town was great. I mean, sure, they were handpicked to fulfill certain roles within the group (bad boy, heartthrob, etc). And yes, they did it on TV for all of us to see. But, Making the Band was was a really good show even with creepy touchy uncle Lou Pearlman involved. The band put out a couple of albums before disbanding, but they left behind some of my favorite songs from that era. Like this one:
If you spell your band's name in part by using a number, I'm immediately a fan (Boyz II Men, 2 Unlimited, etc.) so of course I was a fan of 5ive! They were British and run by Simon Cowell (pre-American Idol), and they were pretty awesome in the day. They had an amazingly inappropriate song called “When the Lights Go Out” and I was completely obsessed with it. At that point, I probably didn't exactly understand what they were singing about anyway.
Tell me you remember Dream Street! These guys weren't exactly a boy band. They were more of an American version of Menudo, I guess. They weren't around for long (probably because they had to do things like go to school and, you know, play little league), but the band is where Jesse McCartney got his start. And he's the only member of the band that's really stuck around. Here they are, obviously lip-synching they're hit(?) "It Happens Every Time".
LFO, short for (wait for it) Lyte Funkie Ones (yeah, I don't know either) weren't around for long, but they made a huge impact in my life. I mean, "Summer Girls" is one of my go-to feel-good jams. How can it not be with awesome lyrics like "Hip Hop Marmalade spic and span. Met you one summer and it all began. You're the best girl that I ever did see.The great Larry Bird Jersey 33."?!?
What boy bands do you miss?
