January through February is the peak time for the influenza virus, but don't worried it isn't too late to get vaccinated.  Many people refuse to get vaccinated for one reason or another.  Don't be one of those people, and let me tell you why... (Click 'READ MORE' for flu info and listings of where to get your shot)

I got my shot in October and haven't been sick all winter.  My luck hasn't rubbed off on my girlfriend though, she has come down with the flu over the last few days.  But because of my vaccination, her virus hasn't rubbed off on me.  So let that be a testament to everyone, don't go through what my girlfriend is going through right now.

Spectrum health still offers the vaccination at a few urgent care locations as well as by appointment, you can find more information here.  For a quick shot, you can still get your influenza vaccination at most Walgreens in the greater Grand Rapids Area.  Click here for a listing of locations that still offer the shot.

Here are some ways to prevent the flu via the Center for Disease Control:

  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.*
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread this way.
  • Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
  • If you are sick with flu–like illness, CDC recommends that you stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities. (Your fever should be gone without the use of a fever-reducing medicine.)

If you or someone you know is showing symptoms of the flu:

  • Be sure to stay home as not to infect others.
  • Drink lots of fluids.
  • Get lot's of rest.

Those are the remedies that my Mom instilled in me... so I figured I should post some information from professionals as well...

Don't take the flu lightly, it can ruin your week... maybe even worse :(
