Leave it to Dave Grohl to use a 2007 Internet meme as a way to protest hate speech.

The Westboro Baptist Church, a hate-mongering organization known largely for targeting Jewish people and members of the LGBTQ community, picketed a Foo Fighters’ show in Kansas City, Mo., this past Friday (August 21). Rather than ignore the group and chill backstage, the Foo Fighters used the opportunity to strike back — with a little help from Rick Astley.

The band drove up to the protestors in a pickup truck and blasted the 1987 Rick Astley hit "Never Gonna Give You Up,” while holding signs that read “You Got Rick Roll’d (again)” and “Keep It Clean,” two references to the time in 2011 when the Foo Fighters first counter-protested the group by blocking them with a performance of "Keep It Clean (Hot Buns)" on a flat-bed truck.

A large group of Foo Fighters fans soon surrounded the truck as Grohl, ever the rabble-rouser, led them all in a spirited clap, successfully drowning out any protests from members of the church.

Grohl addressed the band’s reasoning for the Rickroll during the show that night, saying, “Sometimes you can’t just sit there and do nothing, you gotta go out and say what you wanna say. So we did! Well, tonight we were sitting backstage, and someone said: 'Guess who is coming tonight?' And I said: 'Who?' They said: 'Them.' I said: 'Why?' They said: 'Cause.' And I said, 'Cool, let’s go out and f---kin' hang out with them for a bit.' So we didn't have enough time to put together the big old show that we put on last time, so we figured, you know what, why don't we just f---king rickroll their ass? Cause nothing says love like a little Rick Astley in your life, you know what I’m saying? Never gonna give his ass up!”

He continued, "So I'm going to dedicate this song to all the people who go out and speak their mind, to stand up for what they think is right, because every time we got to stand up in this city in front of them, we do it because we feel like we're standing up for what we think is right."
