If you've been down Jefferson Street in Downtown Grand Rapids over that last couple of days and thought you spotted a giant, pink, polka-dotted bra, you are not crazy, it really is there! The bra is the work of Catherine Smith-Brzeczkiewicz, and is her entry for ArtPrize this year. Her goal with the piece? To raise awareness for breast cancer and to honor her mother who she said dealt the cancer with both strength and grace, which inspired the name of the piece "Embracing With Strength & Grace".

The giant bra is even more giant up close. It measures eleven feet tall and nearly twenty-four feet wide.

Smith-Brzeczkiewicz says in her description of the piece,

As we all know Cancer is Big, Powerful, and Overwhelming. Each person diagnosed with cancer has a different experience; the beautiful part about the experience is that you learn to love yourself more for being stronger than you ever imagined you could be. The bra is a representation of what it means to make it through cancer. It is big, shocking, overwhelming and its beauty represents the person facing it head on. The straps & clasps represent support –the blessing of family and friends.

The piece is also to help the American Cancer Society bring awareness to many of their pink events during October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Those events include the Little Pink Dress Party on October 1 at Louis Benton Steakhouse & LB's Lounge, several Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walks (Traverse City, Muskegon, & Holland), and my personal favorite, Bras Across The Grand.
