Michigan's Governor, Gretchen Whitmer, has drafted a state of emergency due to the extremely cold temperatures rolling into Michigan tonight.  The state of emergency declaration was officially signed Tuesday morning.

These temperatures are going to be the lowest in a generation with the wind chill anywhere between -30 degrees to -50 degrees depending on your location.

The state of emergency will essentially allow the state to use emergency funds to help address threats to public health and safety.  In addition to the state of emergency, Gov. Whitmer has activated the State of Emergency Operations Center (SEOC).  The SEOC will help coordinate response and recovery efforts by the state agencies and local governments.

Gov. Whitmer had this to say in a press release:

“Such widespread, extreme conditions have not occurred in Michigan for many years and it is imperative that we are proactive with record-low temperatures being predicted by the National Weather Service. Wind chills are predicted as low as 50 degrees below zero in many places, such as metro Detroit which is especially unaccustomed to these temps.”
