Grand Rapids has it's fair share of sports teams to root on, but when it comes to women's sports fans are left with only a few options to enjoy.

That's until next year when a new professional sports league adds Grand Rapids to their list of cities with teams when they launch next season.

The Women's Basketball League (or WBL) is adding six teams around the midwest including the brand new team coming to Grand Rapids

They say the team will be named Grand Rapids Soul, and they hope to offer a few extra opportunities to women who want to get into the WNBA or just want to play professionally without having to leave the US.

Why are they starting a new Women's Basketball League?

According to sources, their goal to provide female players with pay equal to or similar to what they would make during the WNBA season.

This new league also would give players the opprotunity to stay closer to home in the US instead of having to move and play overseas, where players can earn more than they do in the WNBA.

How do you try out to join the Grand Rapids Soul?

Tryouts are scheduled for July 24 and 25 from noon to 3 p.m. at the Gerald R. Ford Fieldhouse on Grand Rapids Community College’s campus.
