If you've been thinking about starting a business, you're in the perfect place to do so!

Out of 1,261 "small" cities, Holland was named the #1 place to start a business in 2018. The study was done by WalletHub and looked at cities with at least 25K to 100K people and compared them with 3 key factors:

  1. Business Environment
  2. Access to Resources
  3. Business Costs

Holland scored the best in 'Access to Resources' which includes things like job growth, financing accessibility & investor access. The city came in third in that category. It scored fairly well in 'Business Costs' (#42) but fell in 'Business Environment' (#318). However, with all of these things combined and compared to others, Tulip City is still the leader. In fact, it won the title in 2017.

Many other Michigan cities made the list but Holland was the only one to appear in the top 30. Southfield came in at #88 making it one of four Michigan cities cracking the top 100. Other cities in West Michigan on the list include:

  • Kentwood (35)
  • Wyoming (55)
  • Portage (274)
  • Battle Creek (479)
  • Muskegon (588)

Kentwood appeared high on the list because it placed in first when it came to cheap office spaces and tied in first (along with Wyoming) for the highest average growth of small businesses.
