Next Monday, March 20, is International Day of Happiness. So, in honor of that auspicious day, I thought it would be fun to see how we, Grand Rapids and the Greater Grand Rapids area, stacked up to other large metropolitan areas in the "happiness quotient." Well, I didn't have to go too far because WalletHub did it for me.

The personal-finance website WalletHub just came out with it's report on 2017’s Happiest Places to Live.

In order to determine where people in America are most content with their lives, WalletHub’s analysts compared 150 of the largest U.S. cities across 30 key indicators of happiness. The data set ranges from depression rate to income-growth rate to average leisure time spent per day.

Many of the top cities in the survey are in California, Fremont, San Jose, San Francisco, and so on, based on Emotional and Physical well being, Income and Employment and Community and Environment.

Grand Rapids came in at number 56 out of 150 cities ranked. Okay, that's not too bad, after all, it is snowing. But, we ranked pretty well compared to other large cities like Orlando, New York City, Nashville, Atlanta, Milwaukee, and Detroit, poor Detroit. They came in dead last in happiness in most all categories.
