Kissing someone at the stroke of midnight is a New Year’s Eve tradition and Lady Gaga kept it in tact when she planted a smooch square on the lips of New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg last night (Dec. 31) after pressing the button to drop the nearly 12,000-pound Waterford crystal ball.

So when you see the photos, don’t worry! It’s not a “New Couple Alert.” It’s merely two New Yorkers spreading the love!

Bloomberg personally invited Gaga to press the button to drop the ball – a huge honor for her, being a native New Yorker and all — after she performed a medley of ‘Heavy Metal Love,’ ‘Marry the Night’ and ‘Born This Way’ before the capacity crowd. The New York Post reported that Bloomberg called it the “largest crowd ever,” although a finally tally on how many people crammed into Times Square has not yet been released.

Wearing a crystal and silver Versace concoction and long gloves, complete with a mask that looked like something you would wear to a masquerade ball, the Mother Monster and the Mayor held hands as they shared a kiss on the lips. It seems only fair that Gaga would thank Bloomberg, dressed in a white sweater with an American flag, for bestowing the button-pushing honor on her with a smooch. We wonder if rumored boyfriend Taylor Kinney got jealous.

Gaga and the mayor also shared a dance. How sweet, right?
