Lauren Jauregui Slams Super Bowl Fandom, Says Football Is ‘Distraction’ From Trump
Last night (February 5), while New England Patriots fans relished their team's unlikely ascent to victory, Jauregui was busy dismissing professional sports on various forms of social media. Big-time contests, she said, have become distractions to the horrors of the nation's new Cabinet. "Go ahead and stay distracted," she began on Twitter. "#IgnoranceIsBliss."
And then, she went all in.
"Yo, I don't give a single f--- who finds this annoying," she proceeded on Instagram. "You know what I find annoying? The fact that our country is being overtaken by a fascist dictator and that people would rather feel COMFORTABLE and complacent."
"There are plenty of pop stars who will make you feel nice and safe in your distraction," she concluded in the since-deleted post.
Some appreciated Jauregui's fighting spirit, while others said enjoying football and continuing the fight for constitutional freedoms are not mutually exclusive affairs.
It's not the first time Jauregui has come out swinging against Trump. In an open letter published in People in January, the singer slammed the President's plans for an immigration ban, and insisted the only danger to the American people is white men who are committed to supremacy.
"This country was built and continues to survive off the backs of immigrants and refugees," she wrote. "These people are not terrorists: Many are escaping wars that we created in their lands. To tell another human being that the disastrous tortures of war are not important and to then go even a step further and insult their plight for freedom by labeling them 'terrorists' is just disrespectful to humanity. The only terrorism that both history and I have experienced has been at the hands of powerful white men who are willing to systematically kill and conquer without an ounce of empathy for anything but their pockets."
