I don't think anyone can say anything bad about Mackinac Island. Earlier this year it was named the #1 summer vacation spot in the country and one of the best lake towns, and now it's being classified as one of the friendliest cities for tourists!

Expedia put out the list of "The Most Tourist Friendly Cities in the U.S." and Mackinac was one of the 13. They came to the conclusion based on the following:

  • Helpful tourism board
  • Things to do
  • Quantity/quality of hotel options
  • Access to an airport or major transit center
  • City/discovery tours
  • Amenities

Each was ranked on a scale of 1 to 5 and Mackinac Island, which Expedia describes as a "storybook charm," received a 5 when it came to hotel options. The only one it didn't do great at was access to an airport, receiving a 2 out 5. But considering it's an island that you can only get to by ferry, that totally makes sense.

Of course, the Grand Hotel is mentioned as being the centerpiece of the city but nature, horses and history are also a major part of what makes Mackinac Island so quaint.

Visit Cindy’s Riding Stable to ride your own steed, or visit Great Turtle Kayak Tours if you prefer to explore by water. Let your imagination wander at the Original Butterfly House & Insect World, and don’t forget to treat yourself (at least once) to some Original Murdick’s Fudge before you make your way back to reality.

Austin, Texas was the only city on the list to receive a five-star rating in each category.

Petoskey was also on last year's list.
