Michigan State Police and Michigan Cyber Command Center (MC3) are warning residents to be on the lookout for malware-containing e-mails in their inbox.

According to the news release these emails are going to people and businesses throughout the state. The e-mail has a link or an attachment (.doc, PDF, excel) which contains a virus that can damage your computer or data. The words "Receipt" or "invoice" are normally found in the subject line.

Recent infections have been a result of the Emotet virus.

This virus will steal a person's address book and send out scamming e-mails to their contacts. The Emotet virus can also steal passwords, encrypt user files and infect other computers on the same network. You can get more info about this particular virus here.

MC3 says everyone should carefully go through their e-mails before opening attachments or clicking on any links.
