Rascal is a 3-year-old Shih Tzu. He is a sweet and shy guy who was transferred to the Humane Society of West Michigan from Arkansas.

Rascal is currently kennel-mates with another dog and they get along great, which means he'll most likely do well with other dogs. But as always, it's encouraged to do a dog-to-dog meeting before adopting. He'd also do best in a quiet home with older/respectful children.

This Saturday is the big day! EMPTY THE SHELTERS is taking place at 66 shelters across the state. The BISSELL Pet Foundation will be covering ALL adoption fees; the only thing adopter is responsible for are dog tag fees. In addition to your new furry member, an Adopt-Box will be provided which will include collars, leashes, toys, treats, and five-pounds of dog food donated by Chicken Soup for the Soul. You can find the participating shelters here. The BISSELL Headquarters in Walker will also have about 100 animals at their warehouse to be adopted.

As far as the HSWM, pre-approval is encouraged that way you get dibs on Saturday. You can stop into the humane society to fill out an adoption form or you can fill it out here and take it in. You must meet with an adoption counselor face-to-face to be preapproved. Then come Saturday you'll get to adopt between 11a-12p. Other than that the public is invited from 12p-4p.

If bringing a new pet into your home isn't something that's possible right now, you can still help out the HSWM by checking out the Grand Rapids Ballet Friday 5/11 and Saturday 5/12. Use offer code HSWM50 at checkout and half of the proceeds will help the animals at the humane society.
