Several Michigan Cities Have Made Their Own D-E-T-R-O-I-T style signs
The new Detroit sign installed along Interstate 94 has sparked a mixed reaction from the public, with many criticizing its design and size compared to initial expectations.
The 10-foot-tall "DETROIT" sign, modeled after the iconic Hollywood sign, was installed in early April of this year as part of the city's preparations for hosting the NFL Draft.
The city spent around $425,000 on the project, which also included additional signage at other entry points.
The city wanted to create a visually striking landmark to welcome visitors, but the final product has drawn a lot of hate on social media.
Many have compared the sign unfavorably to an AI-generated rendering that circulated online, which depicted a much larger and more elaborate structure.
Detroit rapper Gmac Cash even released a song dissing the sign, calling it a "Dollar Tree" sign.
Some residents, however, have expressed support for the new sign, arguing that it serves its purpose of identifying Detroit for visitors entering the city.
I'm not a fan of the sign during the day, but when it's lit up at night Its not to bad.
Residents in other Michigan have been inspired to make their own signs.
