The Grand Rapids Research Center opened their doors in September 2017, and Michigan State University is already planning to expand.

Our news partner, WZZM, reports that in just a little over a year, Michigan State has seen the need to go grow and work with private industry to ratchet up their work in new treatments for cancer, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases and other health problems.

The university is teaming up with Health Innovation Partners, a joint venture between Grand Rapids-based Rockford Construction and two Chicago firms.

“This will really catalyze what’s discovered here … and just rocket it forward,” said Norman Beauchamp, the dean of MSU’s College of Human Medicine.

The building is expected to open in late 2021.

There are also plans to build a 600-space parking garage, with tentative plans to build a third building on the site, just north of the research center on Monroe Avenue NW.
