Using Google Analytics, a web site has determined what Michigan has the biggest fear of, and while I wanted it to be "afraid to drive on our crappy roads", it is something that doesn't surprise me.

YourLocalSecurity.com did the analytic study to find every state's biggest fear. Basically it's the fear residents of a state search for the most on the Google Machine.

Michigan's is Entomophobia, the fear of bugs.

This is not shocking at all, especially if you've been out at dusk this week. I took a bike ride Monday at sunset and had thousands of gnats stuck to my shirt, not to mention the ten or twenty that were in my teeth.

And, if you missed it earlier this week there's this cloud of bugs that showed up on radar, so NO, it's not surprising to see we are fearful of bugs.

What was shocking about the survey is that 11 states (tied for number one) have people who afraid of people. Yup. Other people scare the crap out of them.

Really? I'm an introvert and I don't hate people so much that I'm afraid of them. What is happening to us?

Here are some of the highlights of the survey:

  • “Fear of people” and “fear of spiders” were most-searched in 11 states each, taking the awards for overall popularity.

  • North Dakota and Wyoming are the only states without a top-searched fear.

  • New Mexico is one of the sunniest states in the US and the only one most afraid of the dark.

  • Montana, a state with some tall peaks (including Granite Peak at 12,808’ and Mount Wood at 12,661’), is most afraid of heights.

  • California, home to Silicon Valley and Hollywood, has a fear of success.

  • New York, which has one of the least licensed drivers per capita and the most taxi drivers, has a fear of driving.
