West Michigan philanthropist and Amway co-founder Richard DeVos passed away yesterday at the age of 92, at his home in Ada.

He and his family have had a large hand in making downtown Grand Rapids what it is today.

In addition to providing much of the funding for DeVos Place, Richard DeVos also championed the merger of Blodgett and Butterworth hospitals, and made a sizable donation that led to the building of the Helen DeVos Children's Hospital, according to WZZM-13.

A private ceremony will be held next week to honor DeVos.

WZZM-13 reports that he will remembered at a Celebration of Life Service on Thursday, Sept. 13 at 2 p.m. at LaGrave Church in Grand Rapids.

The service is invite-only. The public is welcome to watch the service from the DeVos Performance Hall at 2p.m.

According to MLive, in lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Grand Rapids Christian School Association, Helen DeVos Children's Hospital, LaGrave Avenue Christian Reformed Church, or Prison Fellowship Ministries.
