The iconic red lighthouse on South Haven's South Pier is getting a makeover.

Construction began Tuesday on the 114 year-old West Michigan landmark.

Fox 17 reports that the project is expected to take five weeks. During the renovation the South Pier will be closed.

The Historical Association of South Haven raised $300,000 for the project which includes sandblasting, painting, hanging scaffolding, and other repair work.

According to the organization's website,

The plan is to have it completed before cold weather stops work. If that is not possible, it will be completed in the spring of 2017."

A commemorative walk will also be installed.

Donors wishing to support the project can still get involved by purchasing a commemorative brick that will be placed on the riverfront walkway.

Another iconic Lake Michigan landmark, the pier in Grand Haven, is also currently closed for repairs. The project is expected to take about a year, with the pier re-opening mid July 2017.
