As if the latest news from the CDC regarding the Coronavirus eventually making its way through the U.S. wasn't stressful enough, we now have to worry about scammers taking advantage of the pandemic.

Michigan's Attorney General and the Department of Health & Human Services issued a statement warning residents to be aware of scams surrounding the Coronavirus.

These scams include websites selling fake products, and fabricated emails, texts and social media posts used to steal money and personal information.

Some of these emails are asking for donations for victims and have "damaging attachments."

AG Dana Nessel says the threat of the virus is very real, however, this is an example of scammers preying on people's fears. Currently, there are no confirmed cases of the virus in Michigan and we can take steps to protect ourselves and stay healthy including regular hand washing, covering coughs & sneezes, and staying home when feeling sick.

When it comes to scams keep in mind the following tips:

  • Don't click on links from unknown sources
  • Ignore online offers for vaccinations
  • Check sources before making donations
  • Don't fall for e-mails from people claiming to be experts

Most importantly, do not give any personal information over the phone, e-mail, or text prior to confirming the identity of whom you're speaking to.

People are also asked to report any scams to the Attorney General's office.
