A 28-year-old Grand Valley State University student is suing the school over its refusal to allow her to keep a guinea pig on campus.

Kendra Velzen says Grand Valley State University is violating federal housing rules by not allowing her guinea pig to live with her on campus. The Grand Rapids native  says her guinea pig, Blanca, helps her cope with physical and emotional challenges.

The lawsuit says GVSU backed off slightly and temporarily allowed the guinea pig to live with Kendra while a complaint was pending with the Michigan Civil Rights Department. But, the lawsuit says Velzen refused to agree to restrictions demanded by the school.

I've never had a guinea pig, so I don't know how good they are at providing emotional support, but it will be interesting to see what happens with this case.
