Eating Disorders

A new children's book is causing quite a stir. The book, titled, 'Maggie Goes on a Diet' has sparked controversy among moms and health advocates who claim it sends the wrong message. The book is about a 14-year old girl who is overweight and bullied relentlessly until she goes on a diet and loses weight. She then becomes a star soccer player and gains popularity in school.

As a 16-year-old, Galia Slayen made a life-size Barbie out of wood, chicken wire, paper-mache and -- of course -- two big balloons as way to deal with her anorexia. Now, four years later, Slayen is a sophomore at Hamilton College and is using the massive (but freakishly slim) doll she built to start a conversation about eating disorders and body image issues.
