Three industries account for the largest employers in 45 out of the 50 states in the United States.  Well, two industries and one company...

Healthcare companies employ the most people in 12 states, public universities employ the most people in 11 states, and Walmart employs the most people in 22 states.  Yes, you read that right, Walmart employs the most people in 22 states.  The other 5 states have the most employees in various other industries.

Michigan is not one of the states whose largest employer is Walmart.  Michigan's largest employer is probably the most recognizable institution in our state, the University of Michigan.  U of M employs 48,060 people across its various campuses, hospitals, and other ventures in the State of Michigan.
