A South African animal rescue center is taking care of a baby rhinoceros whose mother was killed for her horn. Even sadder, they report that the baby was discovered next to his mother's body, "crying inconsolably."

According to the Independent, Gertjie (the baby) was discovered in May by employees of the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre, after his mother was killed for her horn. He didn't want to leave his mother's side, and when he finally did and went to the rescue center, he couldn't sleep alone.

The good news is that Gertjie is doing a lot better now that he's safe at the rescue center. He even has a sheep for a surrogate mother.

He also seems to enjoy chasing the ostriches that also live at the rescue center.
