TIME Magazine Praises ArtPrize, Insults Grand Rapids?

Grand Rapids is getting more national attention. This time, stemming from ArtPrize. Time listed Grand Rapids' ArtPrize as a top five festive event that people won't want to miss in 2013. But, somehow, Grand Rapids as a city didn't come across that well.

ArtPrize ranked fourth on the list of events people won't want to miss. What did Time have to say about it?

The world’s most lucrative art competition isn’t in New York City or Hong Kong but in Grand Rapids.

That's all well and good, but what they said afterwards is raising some eyebrows. When talking about our fair city, they said it is,

a Michigan city better known for Rust Belt decline than edgy painting and photography.

But, no one can argue about the success of ArtPrize and its relevance in the art community. Not only is it wildly successful, it also doles out a lot of money to its winners and bring in some of the most talented artists in the world.
