Whether or not The Walking Dead justified its Season 7 guessing game by the reveal of Negan’s victim(s!) this past Sunday, few would argue the sequence itself reached a disgusting new height of gore effects, practical and otherwise. See for yourself, as new behind-the-scenes shots reveal some eye-popping makeup you’ll want to see before lunch.

You’re warned of full spoilers through Sunday’s Walking Dead premiere “The Day Will Come When You Won’t Be,” but most any Glenn fan knew the day might come when AMC adapted the character’s comic fate at the end of Negan’s barbed-wire bat, “Lucille.” Season 7 both had and ate its cake, switching the death to Abraham at first, before swinging back around to include Glenn, comic-accurate popping eye and all.

To mark the occasion, executive producer Greg Nicotero shared some gruesome behind-the-scenes shots of Steven Yeun getting made up for Glenn’s tragic end (via UPROXX):

Keep in mind, AMC reportedly filmed every character taking the bat from Negan as a means to combat leaks, even as both Yeun and Michael Cudlitz claimed to know of their fates at the beginning of Season 6. We’d doubt if every character in the lineup got such extensive makeup, especially after seeing a leaked glimpse of the Maggie cut, but either way, enjoy your nightmares tonight!

The Walking Dead Season 7 will return with Sunday’s “The Well.”
