A little over a year ago, Melissa Torres was a passenger in an auto accident in Texas City, Texas. A total of five people were involved, an all reported to be "uninjured" by police.

Either way Torres, decided to go to the Mainland Medical Center emergency room for a typical evaluation, and indeed was found to be alright. Still, she was billed a hefty $4,850 for the basic evaluation.

Until December came, according to Democratic Underground, when Mainland learned that Torres had made an insurance claim against the driver and settled it for a total of $30,000.

The hospital quickly "updated" the balance of her bill to a total of $20,211 and filed the claim against the settlement. How dirty of that billing department.
