After the wettest year on record, the irony of our water rates going up is not lost on me. Thanks, biodigester!

The City of Grand Rapids this week announced that the water and sewer rates will be going up. The City Commission approved the rate hike at their meeting Tuesday night.

Look for a 2.47 percent hike in your water services, and a 3.49 percent hike in sewage disposal rates, most of that because of cost overruns at the city's biodigester project that should be online this summer. (At these rates, it darn well BETTER!!)

The biodigester will force rates up even more in 2021, perhaps as much as 11 percent.

The new rates will take effect in the new year.
