Iconic and Beloved Grand Rapids Diner is Up For Sale
When talk of legendary restaurants in Grand Rapids comes up, this beloved joint gets mentioned all the time. Hopefully it will stay open!
Fat Boy, a classic American diner that's been around since 1952 is up for sale, MLive reports.
Fat Boy Burgers is located at 2450 Plainfield Ave NE in Grand Rapids Creston Neighborhood.
On the menu you'll find burgers, of course! There are 12 different specialty burgers like the Sloppy Boy, a 1 1/2 lb. burger with ketchup, mustard, pickle, onions, mayo, lettuce, tomato, olives, bacon, fresh cut fries and an onion ring.
There's also the Fat Boy Burger - the restaurant's classic olive burger, and The Hangover Relief Burger, Bacon, ham, sausage, an over easy egg, hash browns, a burger patty and American cheese on a waffle.
At Fat Boy, you'll find all-day breakfast like biscuits and gravy, The Fat Boy Breakfast, and a breakfast burrito. Other options include omelets, sandwiches, hot dogs, and chicken tenders.
Like so many restaurants, Fat Boy struggled during the pandemic. Owner Matt Urbane, who purchased the restaurant in 2009, tells MLive that construction along Plainfield Avenue over the summer also “really hurt us bad”.
He adds,
I’ll be turning 62 this year. So, I’m kind of getting to that point where I just can’t put the energy into it that I used to
Urbane plans to keep the restaurant open while he searches for a buyer. A for sale sign is up on Fat Boy, but the price has not been made public.
Urbane tells MLive,
I’m looking to pass the torch to someone younger with more energy than I have right now.
Customers are sharing their thoughts on Fat Boy being up for sale.
Jane writes on Facebook,
I'm coming in to get my Fat Boy fix soon! I'm sorry to hear that Matt is looking to sell because these are the best burgers in town, esp. the Fat Boy Burger.
