New Vegan, Gluten-Free Restaurant Fika Opening in Grand Rapids

Looking to add more plant-based foods to your diet? A new gluten-free, vegan and vegetarian restaurant is opening up soon in Grand Rapids.

At the beginning of the year, we told you that the owners of Rise Authentic Bakery were branching out with a new concept called Fika (pronounced Fee-kuh). It's a Swedish word that means to take a break and enjoy a meal and some coffee with your loved ones.

The owners say the new eatery is all about "connection, community, support, love, togetherness, and acceptance."

Fika is located at 1359 Plainfield Ave. SE and recently held its soft opening.

On the menu you'll find both sweet and savory breakfast options, including buttermilk pancakes, banana nut French toast, Belgian Waffle, avocado toast, tofu scramble, and biscuits and gravy (yum! my favorite). For sandwiches, enjoy a hot chicken sandwich, BLT or breakfast sandwich. The restaurant had previously shared that smoothies and salads would be available as well, plus baked goods from Rise Authentic Baking Co. and coffee from Squibb Coffee.

The business has a market too, where you can buy local goods and snacks.

The grand opening of Fika is Monday, May 12, 2025. Hours listed on restaurant's Instagram are Monday through Friday, 7a.m. to 3p.m. Saturday and Sunday 8a.m. to 4p.m. Interested in working at Fika? They are hiring. Apply on the company's website.
