Shake Shack Is Officially Coming to the Grand Rapids Area
It will be another fast food first for West Michigan! 2025 saw the first ever Raising Canes open up in the area, with more on the way... and now it's confirmed we're getting a Shake Shack!

The fast-casual chain is known for its Angus beef burgers, hand-spun milkshakes, crinkle-cut fries, chicken sandwiches, frozen custard—and also its mission to "Stand for Something Good."

Shake Shack actually began more than 20 years ago as a New York City hot dog cart that aimed to raise funds for a public art project. The company remains committed to supporting communities with donations, events, and art.

Today there are nearly 400 Shake Shack locations in more than 30 states—and Michigan is about to get one more! Currently there are restaurants in Ann Arbor, Troy, Detroit, Livonia, Novi, Rochester Hills, and Sterling Heights.
Soon we can add the Grand Rapids area to the list!
According to Crain's Grand Rapids, a Shake Shack drive-thru restaurant is opening up at 3029 28th St. SE in Kentwood near Woodland Mall. Right now the space is a parking lot by REI.
Speculation that a Shake Shack was on the way began a few months ago after plans for a 3,529-square-foot "fast casual restaurant specializing in burgers and shakes" were submitted to the Kentwood planning commission. Crain's reports that Shake Shack Chief Development Officer Andrew McCaughan signed a 15-year-lease for a restaurant of that same size on Nov. 25.
And it sounds like Shake Shack isn't the only new spot moving in. Plans submitted at the same time also called for a "fast casual restaurant specializing in Italian beef, hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken, sandwiches, ribs, pizza, and salad." Locals are thinking it might be a Portillo's, which would be another first for West Michigan. At this point though, that has not been confirmed.
Regardless, it's exciting to see the fast food in West Michigan continue to expand! Another new restaurant to look forward to is Bojangles, set to open up on 28th Street in Wyoming this year.
