Monumental Cost Of Eggs! How Expensive Are Michigan Eggs?

Every time you go to the grocery store you are pretty much shocked at the price as the cost seems to keep rising.
The reason has been discussed many times, and yes, it is bird flu. Avian influenza is wreaking havoc with egg producers and so many have had to get rid of entire flocks to avoid further spread of bird flu, according to The Bergen Record article on Yahoo.com.
With the lost flocks naturally prices go up due to supply and demand. Also, farms are doing more health and safety testing to avoid more spread of the bird flu.
So, how expensive are eggs, and can we even afford to buy them?
If you're planning to go to Hawaii don't count on buying eggs. The average cost in Hawaii is $8.92 a dozen. Ouch! But then again, everything is more expensive in Hawaii.
It also depends on the type of eggs you want. Purdue University calculated the different types from cage free, conventional, free range, organic and pasture raised.
The Pasture raised were the most expensive with an average price near $7 a dozen. Cage Free were around $4, Free Range and Organic were averaging $5 plus dollars. And, last but not least, the Conventional eggs were coming in at between $3 and $4 dollars per dozen.
WHAT ABOUT MICHIGAN?
You know we now actually have an EGG LAW! No kidding. It reads, according to the michigan.gov website, Animal Industry Act (Public Act 466 of 1988) to require shell eggs sold in the state of Michigan to be from cage-free housing systems. Business owners who sell shell eggs must ensure the eggs meet the state requirements.
Right now, Michigan Cage Free eggs more or less are running around $4.82 per dozen.
Is there price relief in sight? Sadly, not in the near future.
