Digital IDs Could Transform How Michiganders Carry ID
It happens to all of us sometime. We have to have our driver's license and we have forgotten it. Ick! Big problem.
Well, it might not be a big problem much longer.
Legislation was recently introduced in the Michigan Senate, with support from the Secretary of State, to switch to digital IDs and driver's licenses. Instead of having to search for your driver's license or ID, it would be on your phone.
Is this a good idea?
Colorado, Arizona and Georgia have already instituted digital ID/driver's license's, and have been working to create the technology so that businesses around their states are able to accept them. It is a voluntary program and the states will still issue the good old plastic copy of your driver's license.

Is there a positive to having a digital ID?
Yes! An article on Kyndryl.com, says it is more about safety of your information.
"The benefits are largely around data privacy and data sovereignty. With my digital ID, I control the information I choose to disclose with each transaction. In most instances, personal information such as weight, height and even address aren’t necessary to share, and digital IDs allow you to disclose only essential information. The driver's license information is stored in the secure hardware of the user’s phone and is biometrically locked, providing an added layer of security."
This isn't taking place in Michigan anytime soon, however. Another similar bill was introduced in 2023 but didn't go anywhere.
At the speed of our Michigan legislature, we may be waiting for several years.
