No matter how chipper "Spring Forward" may sound, it's possibly the worst day of the year. Daylight Saving Time (DST) begins in Michigan this Sunday. Officially, it starts at 2:00 am on Sunday, so if you want to be punctual, you'll need to be up then to reset your oven and microwave clocks. We are 1 of the 48 states still participating in this outdated practice, but will 2025 be the last time we scour the junk drawer for manuals on the first Sunday of March?

If Michigan's House Bill 5566, dubbed the Sunshine Protection Act, ever sees the light of day after sitting in the dark hole known as Michigan's Committee on Government Operations for a year after its introduction in March of 2024, we could see DST end in our lifetime.

Why Michigan Has 'Had It' With Daylight Saving Time

According to the Library of Congress, this old and outdated practice was introduced in 1918 as a wartime measure. Let that sink in. That's over 100 years ago. A century has passed, and the power savings supposedly attached to it are null and void with the advent of high-efficiency lightbulbs (and every other technological advancement that has reduced the draw on power plants over the last ONE HUNDRED YEARS!).

And before you start arguing, "What about the farmers?" Stop. USA Today reports that farmers are often blamed for supporting DST, but the truth is that the agricultural community opposed it when it was introduced in 1918 and as part of the Uniform Time Act of 1966, which standardized timezones.

Is There Hope for Ending DST in Michigan?

Aside from House Bill 5566, several proposed bills in Washington, D.C., have been introduced, but none of them have passed on a federal level. Arizona and Hawaii have abolished the practice, so why not Michigan? Michigan's Sunshine Protection Act has its supporters, but the detractors would instead want other states to get rid of it first and then hop on their coattails.

While public frustration grows as more and more people begin to question why we're still practicing a wartime practice from more than 100 years ago, I think we are closer to seeing Daylight Saving Time end in our lifetime. Until then, keep your microwave and oven manuals handy because we set our clocks forward again on Sunday, March 9, 2025.
