
The 100 Happiest Cities in America: What Michigan Metro Ranked?
WalletHub has done it again. They've crunched the numbers to determine which cities in America are the happiest, and guess what? It's not in Michigan. Whether it's the roads, the Lions, or our 27-month-long winters to blame, the WalletHub study has revealed that only one Michigan city is joyful enough to be considered in the top 100. Just one.

Did it make the Top 10? No. Top 20? Sadly, no? Well, Michigan has to have a city in the Top 50, right? Wrong.
Michigan Is Home to America's 2nd Least Happy City
While we didn't make the top 50, we did manage to come in 2nd to Cleveland, Ohio for America's LEAST happy city. That honor goes to Detroit, Michigan, who, out of the 182 metros analyzed in WalletHub's 2025 study, place 181.
The same study also revealed that Motown has the nation's highest separation and divorce rate, making it the USA's #1 city for "Unhappy Marriages." Why? It could be because couples in the D aren't getting enough sleep, as Detroit, Michigan, also ranked last in America for adequate sleep.

So, where can you find the happiest city in America? That would be Freemont, California, whose average January temperature is 59 degrees, according to NOAA. Michigan's average December temperature? 32 degrees. There's a lot of "happiness " in that 27-degree difference.
