It's common knowledge that Michiganders are a hardworking and proud people. Most of us have been doing what we do for decades and don't know when to quit. Sure, most of us dream of hanging up our work clothes for the last time when we hit the age of 65, while others keep going well into their golden years.

But why? Is it for the love of the job? According to a University of Michigan poll, they feel a financial pinch like never before and feel they can't afford to retire. Which city in Michigan has the highest percentage of workers over 65? The answer surprised me.

What's keeping Michiganders at work when they should be kicking back on a beach, traveling, or watching Matlock? Well, for starters, that 401(k) everyone was promised didn't magically multiply like we'd hoped it would. Add in rising healthcare costs, longer life expectancies, and Social Security checks that don't stretch as far as they used to, and you've got the formula for a "working retirement."

But it's not all doom and gloom--some retirees genuinely enjoy their jobs, while others stay on to remain socially connected or to avoid watching Matlock. Whatever their reasons for punching the clock and not hitting the road, many older Michiganders are out there, contributing to the economy and refusing to ride off into the sunset quietly.

While most things have a beginning and an end, for some Michigan workers, there's no end in sight. Changes in the economy, not-so-great 401(k)s, or love of the job are just a few of the reasons given for staying on the job. U.S. Money Reserve did the research, analyzing data from the US Census Bureau's 2022 American Community Survey, to determine the ten metro areas in Michigan that stay on the job well past retirement age.
