So, what is Red Dye No. 3?

It’s a food coloring used to make candy and drinks look bright and colorful. It’s in a lot of popular snacks, but experts are starting to ask if it’s safe.

Why are people worried? Studies done on animals showed that Red Dye No. 3 might cause cancer. In 1990, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration banned it in makeup and other products used on the skin because it caused cancer in rats.

Here’s the weird part: even though it’s banned in makeup, it’s still allowed in food.

Some studies also say Red Dye No. 3 could cause other issues like hyperactivity in kids and allergic reactions. Even though there isn’t strong proof it causes cancer in humans, people are still worried because the dye can build up in the body over time.
