Recall: Michigan Eye Drops Could Cause Infection or Vision Loss
If you have eye drops in your drawer or medicine cabinet, you’d better check the label to make sure what you’re putting in your eyes won’t cause an infection—or something worse.
Last month an eye drop company that sells a well-known and widely used brand of eye drops voluntarily recalled one of its products. Systane Lubricant Eye Drops recalled their products after some strange material was found in a sealed eye drop vial. After looking into it, they found out the material was actually fungal.
So, what does this mean? Well, nothing good if you happen to have one of the contaminated vials.
According to the FDA, fungal contamination in eye drops can be a big deal. It can lead to eye infections that might threaten your vision—or, in super rare cases, even your life if your immune system is compromised.
