Kohl’s Store Closures Are Coming—Find Out if Michigan Made the List
It really feels like business closures in Michigan are starting to become a trend. We’ve been reporting closure after closure since 2023, with last year being the worst of it. 2025 isn’t starting off too hot either, with more businesses calling it quits early in the year. So, what’s going on? Is this just the new normal?
Well, unfortunately, we’re here to tell you about another major clothing retailer that’s just announced the closure of nearly 30 stores nationwide.
Kohl’s announced this week that it is closing 27 of its more than 1,150 locations across 14 states. The company considers these stores to be underperforming.
Which States Are Losing Kohl's Stores?
According to Kohl's, stores expected to close are located in Alabama, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, and Virginia.
Of the 27 store closures, it’s nice to see that Michigan isn’t on the list for a change. However, if this is the first phase of closure announcements, I’m sure more is coming. This is a move we’ve seen before with other major retailers—starting small before eventually scaling up their closures. Only time will tell if Michigan stores will be affected.

Kohl’s shares have plummeted by more than 50% since January of last year. Yeah, that’s not good.
Kohl’s and American Eagle are the only two brick-and-mortar stores where I’ll buy clothes. I know I’m part of the problem since I buy most of my stuff online.
