Win Big in Michigan? A New Law Could Change Everything
Imagine winning millions of dollars, then being forced to tell everyone in Michigan it was you. That's the reality for winners of multi-state lottery games in Michigan. However, that could soon change.
Right now in Michigan, if you win a multi-state lottery game like Mega Millions or Powerball, even if it's a billion dollars, you have to reveal your identity to the public. Seriously, that’s one of the dumbest laws we have.
Think about just how dangerous that really is. You become an instant millionaire, and now everyone knows. Not only would it be annoying because everyone and their brother would be coming out of the woodwork to get their hands on your newly acquired money, but your life would ultimately be at risk.
Michigan Lottery Winners May Soon Get the Privacy They Deserve
According to ABC 12, recognizing these dangerous risks, the Michigan House recently passed House Bill 4004, which would allow winners of multi-state lottery games to remain anonymous, protecting them from unwanted attention and potential dangers.
Look, people want nothing more than to win the lottery, but what they don’t want is to be put in a dangerous or unwanted situation. Thankfully, Republican State Rep. Pat Outman of Six Lakes agrees. That’s why he introduced this legislation to give lottery winners the option to remain anonymous.
The bill is now in the hands of the Michigan Senate for further consideration. If it gets the green light, Michigan will join 11 other states that let multi-state lottery winners stay anonymous. From there, it’ll land on Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s desk to be signed into law.
