If you're looking to buy a home in Michigan, you're in luck—The Great Lakes State is among the most affordable places in the U.S. to purchase a house.

That's not to say that everything on the market may be in your price range, but at least you have options that won't break the bank.

That being said, there’s a certain income Michiganders need to earn in order to buy a house.

Don’t shoot the messenger, but according to Investopedia, that magic number is either going to give you a sigh of relief or seriously stress you out.

What salary do you need to earn in Michigan to buy a house?

Drumroll, please... the magic number - annual median income - is $79,128.

Is that good for you, or not so much?

To put things in perspective, the annual median income required to buy a home in Hawaii is $235,588. I know that’s not exactly comforting, but it does highlight how affordable Michigan is by comparison.

Massachusetts, California, New York, and Montana also rank on the higher end of things.

Besides Michigan, here are a few other states where you can buy a house without needing a six-figure salary:

  • Iowa: $82,117
  • Mississippi: $85,239
  • Louisiana: $80,969
  • Oklahoma: $85,401
  • Kansas: $83,549
  • Indiana: $82,427
  • Missouri: $85,371

To be clear, I am not in real estate, and if you are, you may disagree with Michigan's median income needed to purchase a home.

I genuinely hope that's true. I'd love to hear that people can live comfortably in a nice home on just $40,000 a year.

Unfortunately, I don't know if that is possible in 2025.
