This Michigan City Spends More on Groceries Than Anywhere Else in the U.S.
If it feels like your grocery bill has been getting out of hand lately, you’re definitely not alone — especially here in Michigan. A new study from WalletHub looked at 100 of America’s biggest cities to see where people are spending the largest chunk of their income on groceries, and Detroit landed right at the top of the list.
Detroit Leads the Nation in Grocery Spending
According to the data, the average Detroit household spends about 3.8% of its income on groceries, even though grocery prices in the city aren’t the highest. The problem? Income. Detroit has the second-lowest median household income in the country at just under $39,600, which means even basic grocery trips hit harder on the wallet.
