Why Michigan Deserves Its Own Monopoly Version (And What It Would Look Like)
When it comes to board games, the first one that pops into anyone's mind might be Monopoly.
Plus, Monopoly is all the rage right now with Monopoly Go! and the new Will Ferrell announcement.
According to Google, it is a classic game based on the streets of Atlantic City, New Jersey.
Imagine if the iconic Monopoly game was redesigned with Michigan as its setting.
This state-inspired version would offer a fresh take on the classic game while celebrating Michigan's unique landmarks, cities, and culture.
Did you know there is a Detroit version of Monopoly?
Here's my design if the state of Michigan was the new setting of Monopoly.
Michigan Monopoly Board Design
Instead of the usual streets and avenues, the Monopoly board would feature key locations across Michigan.
The four corners could highlight significant areas across the state like:
- Detroit’s Renaissance Center as the 'Go',
- the Mackinac Bridge as the 'Jail'
- Grand Rapids as the 'Free Parking', and
- Traverse City as the "Go to Jail"
Instead of the traditional properties, any players could purchase iconic locations like Ann Arbor’s University of Michigan campus, the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, Grand Haven Beach, the Motown Museum, or the Detroit Institute of Arts.
Michigan's Monopoly Property Values and Rent
Now, this is where things could be a little bit tricky.
The Monopoly properties would showcase Michigan's economic and cultural diversity.
For example, a property like Detroit’s Greektown might be more affordable, while the waterfront locations along Lake Michigan, like Traverse City or Grand Haven, could demand higher rents.
The players could build houses and hotels on "Lakeside Retreats" or "Motor City Hotspots," adding a local flair to the gameplay.

Michigan Monopoly Tokens
Since the traditional Monopoly tokens would be replaced, new Michigan-themed tokens would be used for this game.
What would these game tokens be?
I was thinking of a cherry to represent Traverse City, a football since Michigan is huge with college sports culture, a snowmobile to highlight Michigan’s winter season, a car for the Detroit auto industry, and a lighthouse since Michigan is the state with the most lighthouses.
Michigan Monopoly Chance and Community Chest
The Chance and Community Chest cards would show Michigan-specific events and challenges.
Players could draw cards like "Win the Michigan State Lottery" or "Pay for a Wolverine football ticket."
Ultimately, I think I would have a lucrative game on my hands. Monopoly Michigan would not only be a fun, competitive game but also a tribute to the state’s residents, rich history, and natural beauty.
